Red vein jasper is a variety of jasper known for its red iron patterns, which can manifest in a variety of warm shades, including orange, pink, red, and brown. Jasper is a member of the chalcedony family and is marked by its distinct opaqueness (as opposed to the translucence of agate).

Jasper forms from microscopic silica crystals, most frequently in sedimentary rock. Silica-rich fluids flow through the rock, depositing silica as it flows. Gradually, the silica builds up into chalcedony, and a variety of inclusions turn it opaque, creating jasper. Jasper can also form through silicification, the process by which organic material (like wood or bone) is slowly replaced by silica, resulting in a jasperized fossil.
