Tiger's eye is a type of quartz that displays chatoyancy, or "cat's eye" effect. Chatoyancy occurs when parallel fibrous inclusions within the stone reflect and scatter light. This leads to the famous band of light moving back and forth as the viewer rotates the stone.

Tiger's eye forms when crocidolite (a form of asbestos) is gradually replaced by quartz. Blue tiger's eye is the younger version of the stone, while gold tiger's eye is matured. Red tiger's eye gets its color from inclusions of iron.
