Sapphire is a type of corundum, a mineral group to which ruby also belongs. It is famous for its blue coloration, although sapphire can also be yellow, pink, purple, green, and colorless. Sapphire's blueness comes from trace inclusions of iron and titanium within the crystal structure.

As a corundum, sapphire is one of the hardest naturally occurring substances. It has a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale and is highly valued for its durability.
