Ruby is a type of corundum, a mineral group to which sapphire also belongs. It is famous for its array of red shades, including pinkish-red, magenta, orange-red, and blood red. Ruby's redness comes from trace inclusions of chromium within the crystal structure. The stone often fluoresces beautifully under ultraviolet light.

As a corundum, ruby is one of the hardest naturally occurring substances. It has a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale and is highly valued for its durability.
