Pyrite (also known as fool’s gold) is an iron sulfide mineral famous for its silvery-yellow color and glittering appearance. Its name comes from the Greek word “pyr” meaning “fire,” due to the sparks it emits when struck by iron.

Pyrite is a polymorph of marcasite, meaning it is the same mineral that crystallizes differently. Its crystals can be cubic, octahedral, or twelve-sided “pyritohedra,” and are often heavily striated. Geologically, pyrite is an abundant mineral found all over the world. Its formation environments usually include low oxygen levels, high sulfur content, and high iron content.
