Petrified wood is a type of fossil. Like all fossils, it is created when the original substance (in this case, wood) is rapidly buried in sediment and undergoes the crystallization process. Over geological time scales, minerals like calcite, jasper, opal, and occasionally pyrite or other minerals, replace the original molecules of the wood, preserving it for centuries and beyond.
