Moss agate is a type of microcrystalline quartz that forms with inclusions that strongly resemble moss or other kinds of plant life. Although it look as though there is organic matter within moss agate, the "mossy" effect is caused by inclusions of iron, manganese, chlorite, or hornblende. Moss agate forms when mineral-rich fluid flows through underground rock, depositing silica and other minerals as it flows. Organic-looking inclusions are layered in the agate as it builds up over time, eventually forming moss agate.
