Variegated jasper is a type of opaque microcrystalline quartz defined by its striped patterns and earthy coloration. It forms when mineral-rich fluid flows through underground rock, depositing silica and other minerals along the way. Over time, these minerals bond and accumulate, creating the stone we know as gold jasper. The layers in variegated jasper are caused by different minerals slowly layering on top of each other during the formation process.
