Iolite (also known as cordierite) is a silicate mineral that often displays pleochroism, meaning it shows different colors according to the angle at which the stone is viewed. The base color for the stone is usually a deep violet-blue.

Historically, the Vikings were known to have used iolite as a navigational tool on the open seas. They made extremely thin slices of iolite and used them as a polarizing filter to determine the position of the sun on cloudy days or when the sun was below the horizon. Because of this, iolite is known as the "Viking's Compass."
