Rock/Mineral Info:
Emerald is a type of beryl, a mineral group to which aquamarine and morganite also belong. It is known, of course, for its rich green coloration; this comes from trace inclusions of chromium oxide or vanadium in the crystal structure. The name “emerald” can be traced back to the Greek word “smaragdos,” which simply means “green.”
Geologically speaking, emerald is quite rare because of the specific environmental conditions it requires in order to occur. Beryllium is only present in small amounts in the Earth’s crust, and it is unusual for enough beryllium to build up in one location to crystallize. Further, the conditions needed to form beryllium are very different for those needed to find vanadium and chromium (which are needed to give emerald its green color). But on serendipitous occasion, all these boxes are ticked and emerald does occur.
Metaphysical Properties:
Emerald is associated with growth, expansion, new beginnings, vitality, compassion, love, friendship, and domestic bliss. It is connected primarily to the heart chakra.
