Quartz is the second most common silicate mineral on Earth (behind feldspar), composing about 20% of the Earth's crust. It forms when mineral-rich solutions flow through underground fissures and deposit silicon into the rock. Billions of silicon and oxygen atoms bond together as tetrahedrons (three-sided pyramids), stacking and building quartz crystals. This process can take millions to billions of years.
