Chrysoprase is a type of chalcedony known for its apple-green color, which is caused by inclusions of nickel in the crystal structure. It is usually translucent to opaque, and its green color can manifest in many different shades, including light, minty green to a deep forest green. Chrysoprase gets its name from the Greek words “chrysos” meaning gold and “prason” meaning leek (which refers to the stone’s green hue).

The primary sources of chrysoprase are Australia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Brazil, and the United States. It typically forms in environments that are rich in silica, most often as a secondary mineral associated with nickel deposits.
