Tiger's eye is a type of quartz that displays chatoyancy, or "cat's eye" effect. Blue tiger's eye is the younger version of the crystal (by contrast, gold tiger's eye is much older). Tiger's eye forms when crocidolite (a form of asbestos) is gradually replaced by quartz.

Chatoyancy occurs when parallel fibrous inclusions within the stone reflect and scatter light. This leads to the famous band of light moving back and forth as the viewer rotates the stone.
