Imperial Z amethyst is one trade name for prasiolite or green amethyst, which is a type of quartz that occurs very rarely in nature. It derives its color from natural heat treatment in the Earth's crust, often as a result of volcanic or geothermal activity. (This heat-treating effect can be recreated by human hand as well.) Iron impurities in the quartz crystal lattice first cause the purple color of amethyst, and then as the stone is heated either naturally or unnaturally, its purple color can sometimes turn green.
