Rainbow obsidian is a variety of obsidian known for its flashes of colors when held at particular angles. These color flashes are caused by tiny inclusions of magnetite within the stone. Obsidian is not technically a crystal, but rather a volcanic glass that forms when lava cools rapidly. 

Metaphysical Properties:

Rainbow obsidian is associated with protection, grounding, and higher consciousness. It resonates primarily with the root and crown chakras.
