Abalone are marine snails whose shells are known for their colorful iridescence. These shells have a low, open spiral structure with several respiratory pores lined up in a row on the outer edge. The iridescent inner layer on the shell is composed of nacre, which is produced by many marine species and is also the composition of mother of pearl.
